Magnolia 'Butterflies', The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

Quarterly BAGSC Meeting: Magnolias at The Huntington with Tim Thibault
Members Only, March 8, 2025

Join us for our upcoming March Member's Only Quarterly Meeting on Saturday. March 8 at 9:30 am Pacific Time on Zoom.

In addition to a brief BAGSC meeting, our very special guest speaker will be Tim Thibault, Curator, Woody Plant Materials at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. We will be learning all about Magnolias and The Huntington’s magnificent collection. Tim will present a history of the collection and provide us with a map of the Magnolia locations on The Huntington grounds.

Magnolias are an ancient genus, and also the focus of some of The Huntington’s most important botanical conservation work. The Huntington holds one of the foremost collections of Magnolias. Their vibrant blooms range in color from white petals flushed in shades of pink to deep rose or purple or yellow. Magnolias are also known for their luscious fragrances. BAGSC has been invited to create artworks of Magnolias for The Huntington to use in their educational outreach. More details about the Magnolia project will be shared at the meeting.

Please RSVP for this program. Attend live on Zoom to ask Tim your questions and/or view the recording during the two weeks following our meeting.

The presentation will be recorded—Tim has generously agreed to allow us to record his presentation so those who are unable to participate on the day of the live event will be able to view it later. The recording will be available for two (2) weeks following the workshop, only for those BAGSC members who have RSVP'd. RSVP by March 7 to attend live or to view the recording. Everyone who RSVPs will have access to both the meeting and the recording.

From Huntington Verso article, "In Celebration of Trees," Posted Friday, April 25, 2014 by Lisa Blackburn.

"With more than 3,100 accessioned trees in the Botanical collections, picking out a single favorite is no easy task. The Huntington's resident "tree guy," Tim Thibault, shared some of his own top picks with Verso. Heading up the list: The ombú tree (Phytolacca dioica), an Argentinean native planted by the Lily Ponds in 1912."
