Capturing the Arboretum: The Art of Botanical Illustration
A presentation of artwork depicting plants found in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. The Arboretum is home to a large collection of plants derived from Mediterranean climates around the world.These include biogeographical collections from Africa, Australia, Canary Islands and Madagascar. Many of the “garden plants” found in Southern California were developed and introduced by the Arboretum.
This exhibition is being held in the newly renovated Los Angeles County Arboretum Library.
Everything’s Coming Up Roses
Everything’s Coming Up Roses made its debut on May 10, timed to be on display for Descanso’s Rose Festival on the weekend of May 14 and 15. BAGSC volunteers demonstrated our art form during the Rose Festival.
The Boddy House is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays and is included with admission to Descanso Gardens.
Looking for Flora
Roger’s Garden's Fine Art Gallery presented a juried exhibition of BAGSC drawings and watercolors. This first time event will began with a “Paint Out” in the gardens with several of the exhibiting artists, followed by a reception with the artist in the Art Gallery.
A Day of Art
BAGSC members returned for the fourth annual Day of Art at
Roger’s Gardens, featuring plein aire and botanical art. BAGSC had an outreach table about botanical art, BAGSC and ASBA, and presented a free Nature Journaling workshop. BAGSC taught Roger's visitors the basics of botanical art, drawing freesias, pansies, and other flowers
from the nursery.
A Passion for Camellias
Presented in conjunction with the Camellia Societies of Southern California first flower show of the 2015 season and a Camellia display by Nuccio’s Nurseries, BAGSC held a two-day botanical art exhibition of Camellias in Van de Kamp Hall. The Camellia Painting Exhibit and Flower Show was open to the public both days, and BAGSC members demonstrated botanical art. The exhibition was subsequently moved to the Boddy House, where it remained on display until May, 2016.
Zoo in Bloom
In an effort to showcase the non-animal living beauties at the Santa Barbara Zoo, BAGSC presented a juried show featuring the plants on the Zoo’s grounds. The exhibition was held in the Volentine Family Gallery, located inside Discovery Pavilion. BAGSC members demonstrated at the opening, Member Morning on October 3, 2015.
