Please register early. This “Day of Botanical Art” is open to the public, so reserve your spot now, as registration is anticipated to fill quickly.

Workshop Description

Back by popular demand, the Botanical Artist Guild of Southern California (BAGSC) Basic Botanical Art Workshop is designed to allow participants of all levels an opportunity to enjoy a hands-on botanical art experience in different mediums. On the day of the 26th, each participant can choose to participate in any combination of four (4), 80 minute, hands-on workshops taught by skilled BAGSC instructors.

BAGSC teacher members will be sharing their skills, displaying some of their works and bringing information. Participants may choose to sit down with different artists to experience techniques applied to creating botanical art. The schedule for the day is as follows:

SESSION 1: 9:30 am - 10:50 am

All basic supplies, including paper and paint, are included in the price. Additionally, most artists will bring special supplies to share that can be used with their techniques. Participants are welcome to bring some of their supplies if desired. Please see the lists in the right-hand column.

Location, parking, and other instructions


This is a BAGSC-sponsored workshop; there is no information about this workshop on The Arboretum's website. If you have questions, or need additional information, please contact the BAGSC Education Chair.

This workshop will be held at The Los Angeles County Arboretum. The Arboretum is located at: 301 North Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007.

Parking and Entrance:

Parking is free at The Arboretum. You do not need to pay admission at the front gate to attend the workshop. Walk directly through and let them know you are here for the Botanical Art Workshop.

Directions from surface streets, freeways and public transportation are available on their website, in addition to accessibility, hours and dining information.

BAGSC will supply each participant with the following goodies in a Ziplock baggie
(included in workshop fee)


Pencils: 2H, HB, B, 2B, and 4B

Erasers: Kneaded eraser and gum eraser

Pens: Pigma Micron pens, .01 and .03

Watercolor samples: (participants will be able to take a "squirt" of tube paints if desired)

Brush: Winsor & Newton Cotman, #4 round synthetic brush

And:
Paper Towels
Disposable water cups
Small plastic palettes

And more!

Supplies instructors will bring to share, use to learn, and for you to try out. These supplies will be available at each session table.


Papers: Bristol vellum; Bristol smooth; Arches hot press, 140lb.; tracing paper

Pencils and pens (Speedball #512 nibs with holders)

Colored pencils

Watercolors and ink, including sample watercolors (participants will be able to take a "squirt" of tube paints if desired)

Brushes

Erasers

Water soluble graphite

Silverpoint supplies, including paper prepared with ground, copper wire and holders

Masking fluid

And more!

You may want to bring the following of your own supplies (but not necessary)

  • Sketchbook, or something with which to take notes
  • Kneaded erasers or other erasers
  • Favorite pencils or pens
  • Empty palette (to collect sample colors)
  • Any of the items from the lists above

In addition to the workshop sessions, BAGSC will be selling extra art supplies purchased for the "Day of Art" as well as gently used art supplies in our very own art supply Mercado.
