An Illuminating Look at Legumes

Exhibition presented in conjunction with Leatherby Libraries and Schmid College of Science and Technology.

Jennifer Funk, associate professor, Schmid College, wrote the introduction to the 12-page educational booklet that accompanied the exhibition. Produced by Leatherby Libraries, the booklet was free to visitors. Professor Funk also was a resource for BAGSC artists, and with her students wrote educational signage for each of the categories of legumes. Professor Funk's research focuses on nitrogen acquisition of native and non-native legumes.

Botanical Oddities

Weird, Wild, & Wonderful Adjunct Exhibition

Exhibition presented in conjunction with "Weird, Wild & Wonderful" the New York Botanical Garden Second Triennial Exhibition. This exhibition visited The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens June 13-August 23.

BAGSC hosted a Symposium and adjunct art show celebrating the eccentric beauty of the plant kingdom.

Postcard for "A Passion for Camellias"

A Passion for Camellias

Presented in conjunction with the Camellia Societies of Southern California first flower show of the 2015 season and a Camellia display by Nuccio’s Nurseries, BAGSC held a two-day botanical art exhibition of Camellias in Van de Kamp Hall. The Camellia Painting Exhibit and Flower Show was open to the public both days, and BAGSC members demonstrated botanical art. The exhibition subsequently moved to the Boddy House, where it remained on display until May, 2016.

Artists’ Favorites

Exhibition presented in conjunction with the San Diego Botanic Garden, showcasing forty-three works by eighteen artists. Each artist submitted works that held special meaning for them. The artworks were accompanied by descriptions written by the artist about what their connection to the subject, why they chose it and how it was created.

The Art and Science of Native Plants

Exhibition in conjunction with The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, to celebrate California Native plants and to assist in fostering understanding, preservation and use of California native flora. The exhibition featured a range of styles and media. Works effectively used pen and ink, watercolor on paper and vellum, colored pencil on paper and film, and mixed media to depict California native plants—many with their pollinators.

The WILD Flowers

Exhibition in conjunction with the Sturt Haaga Gallery exhibit, “The WILD Flowers”, a collection of contemporary works by California artists. Concurrent with "The WILD Flowers", contemporary botanical illustrations by members of BAGSC were presented in the Boddy House.

Drought Tolerant Beauty featuring artwork by Joan Keesey.

Drought Tolerant Beauty

Exhibition in conjunction with Chapman University Leatherby Libraries and Jennifer Funk, associate professor, Schmid College. Dr. Funk and her Ecology students wrote descriptions of the plants’ drought-tolerant traits.

Fifty-nine pieces by 18 BAGSC members were exhibited in the show. The art was arranged through the gallery areas by drought tolerant mechanisms used by the plants.

A Day of Art

Fifty artists, including artists from BAGSC, drew and painted in the Roger's Gardens nursery throughout the day. BAGSC had an interactive table where visitors could explore fruits and vegetables, and make stamp prints with them. BAGSC's information table displayed original art, prints and books featuring historical and current botanical art, from scientific illustration to plant portraits.

Exhibition presented in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden presented thirty-two works by thirteen artists. The works were selected by each of the artists to promote the botanical illustration tradition.

This exhibit of botanical art was presented by Chapman University Leatherby Libraries. Twenty-three BAGSC artists exhibited 75 works of art in watercolor, colored pencil, ink and graphite.
